Achill Beg

Achill Beg is a small island off the south coast of Achill Island, beside Cloughmore.  People lived on Achill Beg for around 3000 years and now the island is deserted.

There is a lighthouse on the South of the island. Some of the houses are still used as holiday homes by distant relations of the families that were evacuated in the late 1960's. The Island is about 320 acres in size. The population varied from a high of about 200 down to 30 which meant the school attendance was single figures. So in 1965 the remaining population moved off Achill Beg. A beautiful study of the island was written by Jonathan Beaumont in 2005, called "AchillBeg, The Life of an Island" and is well worth reading.
